Phew, this has been a tough week. We’re working extra hours for a few days so we can take Friday off. It’ll be worth it when the weekend rolls around, but during the week it’s really, really tough.
I’ve been tied to my desk since Monday, and haven’t even left to go out for lunch. I can feel every muscle in my lower body freezing into position. I’m thinking of getting a pair of mbt shoes and running a few laps around the office just to get my blood flowing.
The good news is, this weekend is supposed to be gorgeous, weather-wise. I’m planning to get outside and enjoy it. Yay, long weekend!
Summer is winding down, and I couldn’t be happier. This summer was so incredibly hot that I’m looking forward to autumn and sweater weather and changing leaves and all of it.
The only thing I’m not looking forward to are the shorter days and lack of sunlight. I’m totally spoiled by having it light out until close to 9 o’clock, and waking up to sunshine. I’ve already noticed that it’s getting light later in the morning, which is how it starts. Before I know it, I’ll be driving home in the dark, walking up the path to the house lit by landscape lights instead of sunshine, and hunkering down to darkness at 5 in the afternoon.
Oh well. Seasons change, and at least it will cool off and I won’t break out into a sweat everytime I move to brush my hair or tie my shoes. There’s always a bright side, right?
Well, I could have told you that! But it turns out, Louisville is officially the hottest city this year, with 73 above normal high temperature days between June and August 17th, according to the National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration.
From this article:
Louisville has spent the most days above normal temperatures beginning in June, according to NOAA: a total of 73 for June, July and up to Aug. 17. The city normally sees summer high temperatures ranging from 83 in June to 87 in July. But this year it logged nearly all of June and July above normal, and it spent every day in August, up to Aug. 17, above normal. Still, it hasn’t broken its record 107-degree day, set in 1936.
Usually, I’m the person who doesn’t want summer to end. This year? Autumn can’t get here fast enough.
In keeping with yesterday’s post, I think it’s so strange to think of myself as a “business owner.” I mean, I am, definitely, and I have the tax ID number to prove it. But still, it’s weird. Aren’t business owners supposed to be executive types, with suits and briefcases and smartphones with Bluetooth earpieces?
I guess it depends on the business you’re in. And when you have a business like mine, you definitely don’t want to wear a suit. You might get glue on it.

Everyone fits in somewhere, I guess. For now, I’ll stick with my jeans and Old Navy t-shirts and flip flops. Because that’s the kind of business owner I want to be.
I don’t think I’ve mentioned it, but the shop is doing pretty well for having just opened. I’m trying to keep up with online marketing, via blogging and Twitter and Facebook and all of that, and so far business has been fairly steady.
I’m trying to decide how to handle “real world” (as opposed to virtual world) marketing. I have a bunch of business cards that I keep with me to hand out when I talk to people about the shop. But beyond that, I’m at a loss. My husband suggested that I print up some business flyers to post at coffee shops and bookstores and around campus. I’m also trying to research local craft shows to check out and see if they’re something I could do on the weekends.
It’s hard trying to juggle the shop with a full time job, but so far it’s been really fun. I’m just hoping that I can get word out enough to get some good holiday traffic!
